What we do
School Improvement Programme
Primary School pupils have a huge enthusiasm for going to school but there may be more than a hundred in a classroom that lacks desks, chairs, textbooks, exercise books, library books, even writing equipment.
Our deliveries of resources will lift everyone’s spirits and ambitions. Each school is asked to list within the funds available the resources that will best improve the quality of teaching and learning. These are delivered at the start of the school year.
We are seeing the results of a climate of hard work: more children pass, more selected to continue education in a Secondary school and that is a life-changing opportunity.
In 2024 deliveries have been made to five rural Primary schools on the mainland in Northern Malawi and five more on the islands of Likoma and Chizumulu.
Secondary School Bursaries
The second part of the School Improvement Programme is the offer of some bursaries for children who have done really well in the Primary Leaving Certificate exams and have been selected for a Secondary school but have no hope of paying the fees. Less than 15% of Malawians benefit from secondary education.

Unfortunately, fees have more than doubled in the last two years and the rising cost of living, in particular the price of food, has put secondary education beyond the means of even more parents. A place at one of the top national boarding schools would cost about £115 per term while the fee at a local day secondary school is only £15 a term but even that is way beyond the means of most Malawian parents whose priority is providing food for the family. £200 for four years of secondary education – what an investment in that young person, their future family, village, region, even the nation.
Tertiary Education Bursaries
We support a few university students and keep in touch with them not only during their course but afterwards too. For one or two orphans Team malawi is a family. The cost of a year’s university fees including accommodation is currently around £1500.
